Data centres are meticulously designed pieces of infrastructure, requiring sophisticated, complex power solutions. Among this is a modular energy switchroom, housing the critical electrical infrastructure responsible for a safe and efficient distribution of electrical power to data centre equipment. Historically, AVK hasn’t been a player in this game, not having provided modular electrical switchrooms in the past. That changes now.

AVK PowerPods: Why now?

It’s no secret that the industry is experiencing delayed lead times and periodic supply shortages. These are some of the main pain points that AVK PowerPods are positioned to overcome, allowing data centre operators to experience an easeful, faster delivery process.  

AVK PowerPods are designed to help data centres scale. Larger, higher-capacity projects are becoming necessary to cater to the increase in demand for AI and hyperscale data centres, and our ready-to-deploy model facilitates this industry growth.

AVK PowerPods provide the critical electrical infrastructure that safely delivers power to data centre equipment. Including transformers, switchgear, batteries, UPS (uninterruptible power supply), circuit breakers, cooling integration, control panels, fire suppression equipment, and distribution boards, AVK PowerPods are containerised units – pre-engineered and fully-integrated. They look something like this:  

  • How do AVK PowerPods work?

    AVK PowerPods are tailored precisely to your data centre’s requirements, delivering as much or little integrated infrastructure as your project needs. 

    A typical PowerPod can be configured to provide a complete electrical power train from incoming medium voltage (MV) supply through to low voltage (LV) distribution, ready for connection to downstream sub-distribution boards and PDUs supporting critical IT loads.  

    For example, an incoming medium voltage supply can enter the PowerPod directly to a Ring Main Unit (RMU) or MV switchgear assembly. From there, power is stepped down to low voltage via a transformer and distributed through the low voltage switchboard. Essential loads are supported through a dedicated UPS system with associated battery autonomy, ensuring resilient and continuous power to critical equipment. 

    The PowerPod can then deliver power directly to the data centre or be further enhanced with static transfer switches and/or automatic transfer switches creating a fully integrated and deployment-ready solution.  

    Beyond electrical distribution, AVK PowerPods can also incorporate direct expansion or chilled water cooling, fire detection and suppression, controls, Building Management System (BMS) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. This makes them a true one-stop modular infrastructure solution for data centre projects.  

    By integrating key systems within a prefabricated, factory-tested pod, AVK PowerPods help reduce on-site construction time, simplify project co-ordination, improve quality control, and accelerate deployment supporting faster, more efficient modular data centre builds.

Data centre operators working with us will benefit from complete customisability within the PowerPods without finding themselves locked into a rigid technology solution. Superior testing and off-site construction 

Our PowerPods are constructed and integrated off-site in a brand-new, large-scale facility located in North-West England. Construction within the facility allows for a higher quality due to being in a controlled factory environment as opposed to a construction site. The off-site process also allows full and effective testing of the generator and PowerPod integration at the factory. This is the part that often takes the most amount of time on site – by completing this in advance we can reduce construction time and be sure in the knowledge that superior testing has been carried out, therefore speeding time-to-deployment.  

 

Facilitating scale with a brand-new facility  

Our new facility, located in Haydock, is 140,000 sq ft and has the capacity to house 22-25 PowerPods at one time dependant on their size. Most will be up to 18-meter in length and up to 4.2 meters wide. The factory has been designed specifically to meet the increasing demand for AI infrastructure, offering mass deployment of PowerPods to meet the growing capacity of future data centres. The expansive capacity of the facility in combination with our supplier agnostic approach increases the likelihood of a fast deployment for a data centre operator. The factory is also aptly located, having multiple access routes for fast delivery to data centres.
