For the first time, our industry has its very own day to be celebrated. The 12th of September 2025 marks National Data Centre Day (NDCD) – a new awareness day dedicated to recognising the vital role data centres play in…
- Powering the UK’s digital economy.
- Supporting Artificial Intelligence (AI).
- Keeping society connected.
The significance of 12th of September
On 12th September 2024, data centres were officially recognised as Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) by the UK Government. This placed them alongside water, energy, and transport, recognised as critical services that keep our country ticking over. Exactly one year later the data centre industry, and AVK, are celebrating this achievement and shining the light on our significance once again.
Why do data centres matter?
You use data every time you interact with technology. Every text, scroll, transaction, and stream, is made possible by the constant whirring of a data centre. They’re the backbone of modern, digital life, enabling:
- AI and Cloud Computing – powering everything from smart assistants to advanced machine learning models.
- Essential Services – supporting healthcare, finance, education, and communications.
- Innovation and Growth – driving the UK’s ambitions in digital transformation and the wider tech economy.
And yet despite their pivotal role, data centres often remain invisible to the public.
That’s why National Data Centre Day is so important. Celebrating this day of awareness shines a spotlight on our industry, the people powering it, and the innovations shaping a more connected, sustainable, and digital future.
What does our support mean?
Supporting National Data Centre Day is about recognising how digital infrastructure underpins everything we do. By bringing this industry to the forefront, we can:
- Improve the public’s understanding of the role data centres play, and how they are impacted.
- Attract the next generation of talent into STEM and IT careers, bridging the skills gap that is increasingly becoming a problem in our industry.
- Highlight the progress in sustainability, from energy efficiency to renewable power.
We’re loving seeing more attention being shone on the data centre industry – NDCD is just the start. Together, we can raise the awareness needed to power progress.
