At AVK, we love welcoming students to carry out their work experience requirements with us. Fresh talent is necessary for our industry, and we're making the first steps towards that - introducing young people to the world of data centres, and presenting the industry as a career option.

In the data centre industry, we talk a lot about the skills gap we’re experiencing. Attracting young professionals into the industry is becoming an imperative exercise, to hand down the expertise that industry veterans possess. While we’re seeing progress, we still have a way to go.

Today, 15th July 2026, is World Youth Skills Day, which was established with the mission to acknowledge the importance of equipping young people with technical, vocational, and digital skills for employment and entrepreneurship. The valuable skills that people learn when they’re younger will follow them into their careers, which is why it’s crucial to start the education early.

At AVK, we’re welcome young students to come to our offices and spend time with our employees for their work experience requirements. Last week was a great example of this, when we welcomed two students, Lucy and Elliot, to see what life is like at AVK. Lucy sat with our Internal Communications and Marketing teams, and Elliot spent time on CAD design, and then spent his second day within the Graphic Design department of our Marketing team.

When taking students through their time with us, we need to remember not only to teach them our respective disciplines, but also to give them a crash course in data centres and the world of power solutions. This is the first step in increasing the education around our industry for the younger generation, and those beginning to make decisions about their careers.

We asked Lucy to summarise her time with us, signalling to other young students what they can learn from just a small amount of time in the data centre industry:

“From the 6th to 10th of July, I spent work experience with AVK. After an induction to the company, I then visited Haydock and Maidenhead where I sat with Internal Communications for 2 days, then I was with the Marketing team for 2 days in London.

During my two days with Internal Communications with Lori, I got a taste of what the role is, I learnt the importance of open and clear communication, the way to gain engagement from employees by maintaining consistency, and how even adding emojis to a post can make it appeal to more people by encouraging morale.

During my first day (in Haydock) I created a campaign for a company event, including writing a central post and creating a promo poster. I then decided the best way to communicate different messages, I found out how to create a content calendar and plan each campaign by identifying things like what channels should be used.

On my second day (in Maidenhead) I learnt how to create a launch campaign for an employee wellbeing programme, I put together an audience profile, which included possible barriers, and discovered how I could make employees engage with the programme. I included a logo, social visual, iPhone wallpaper and a poster. I found Internal Communications very interesting and I really enjoyed it, each of the things that I looked at were things that I hadn’t realised required so much detail and thought and I loved seeing how the process happens.

In London, I joined the Marketing team. Here I analysed the LinkedIn channel with India and I realised how many different thought processes go into a post, the way it is written and the type of content it is. I looked at what worked best for interactions on a post (short videos over articles) and I shared my opinion on what I think would engage more people (such as interactive posts like polls).

I was shown by Giuseppe how psychology mixes into the world of marketing and how emotions like humour and trust are large aspects in people choosing a company to work with. I also wrote a post about the AVK Academy, and I learnt the importance in things like having an enticing first sentence, including relevant information and keeping it light-hearted. I gave my opinion on some graphic design reels with Jack and Charles and saw how sound and visuals can help a brand image.

On my first day in the London office, another student called Elliot was also on work experience, he shared his experience:

I really enjoyed my work experience at AVK as I was guided through various processes and given engaging activities with support from Jack such as designing a new logo. This process helped me to learn new and efficient ways of working on Illustrator and planning out my thought process. Overall AVK has helped me to get a feel for the work environment and taught me new skills and improved my confidence in graphic design along with giving me a better understanding of what career path I would like to go down.

I found my time in marketing to be incredibly intriguing, it has been something I’ve thought about for a while and it helped me get an idea of what it would be like to have a career in it.

I think it is important for young people to realise the huge impact that data centres have on our lives, they are necessary to run things like TikTok, Spotify, etc, and they also handle the power for AI.”

It has been amazing to see how young students respond to such a new environment when they have work experience at AVK, not just adjusting to a professional atmosphere, but also to the data centre industry.

At AVK we’re dedicated to supporting young people in their career journeys, whether that’s in the form of a work experience placement, graduate and entry level roles, or a placement on our AVK Academy programme. Fresh talent is what this industry needs, and the more education students receive about their options in our industry, the faster we’ll bridge that skills gap.
